"Winter House training"
Our Winter has set in severe and very quickly this year!!!! There are some creative ways to train young puppies safely!
When our weather turns extreme and especially when we are dealing with wind chills, it does make it very challenging for both humans and young puppies to endure the cold!!!!
If the weather is too cold the young ones are unable to accomplish duties until they warm up and move around. The goal is this does not happen where we do not want!
The best solution for both Winter and for families that have work schedules to accommodate is to invest in a "Puppy Playpen".
(Puppies need to be at the Vet at 8:00 this morning for well checks and will complete when I return home) 11-17-14

Housebreaking is the first and most important project!
If you are organized and have a positive yet realistic plan, this will be accomplished in a short amount of time.
The key to successful housebreaking is consistency, rewards and if you have accidents review your plan and troubleshoot! If you feel unsuccessful, please call me before you become frustrated. I am happy to help you through accomplishing this project.

A PERFECT DAY IN A PERFECT WORLD!!!
6:00 A.M. Puppy wakes up. Carry puppy outside and walk in circles and have pup follow you until he "whizzes" and does his "business" (Praise and treat)
6:15 A.M. Breakfast time.
6:30 A.M. Playtime
7:00 A.M. Carry puppy back outside and repeat.
7:15 A.M. Playtime and of course will need a little nap.
11:00 A.M. Puppy awakes; carry out, back to the circles.
12:00 P.M. Lunchtime.
12:15 P.M. Playtime.
12:45 P.M. Back outside and back to walking in circles.
1:00 P.M. Naptime.
3:00 P.M. Puppy awakens; carry back out to the same area.
3:15 P.M. Playtime.
5:00 P.M. Back outside to designated area, more circles.
5:15 P.M. Dinner time.
6:00 P.M. Carry pup back outside and even more circles.
6:15 P.M. Playtime; keep puppy awake even if they want to have a nap. A tired puppy will be more inclined to sleep through the night.
10:00 P.M. Back outside for the final time. Praise, treat and chew toy and time for bed.
Everyone will be exhausted and sleep very well!!!
As we all know we do not live in a perfect world. I would like to share some tips to help you. Each pup has a different personality and metabolism.
Puppies will go through growth spurts predominantly in their first five months. Their appetite will increase and they will need to go out more frequently.

Tips!!! When taking your Puppy outside and only have accomplished "Whizzing", that is only 1/2 of the project. If you need to take your Puppy back inside your home. "Do Not" allow them freedom to run and play! While you were outside you did begin to stimulate their "Duty Call" ! My comparison is you have taken a grenade outside and pulled the pin, then when you return inside.... Yes!!! A little more exercise and Your Puppy will accomplish their "Big Duty" and you sure do not want in your home!!!! If you need to return inside and your Puppy has only accomplished 1/2 of duties, either hold your puppy or return them to their kennel for just a few minutes, regroup and return outside. The best way to "Hurry" their "Duties" is to have them follow you and move their little legs, then when they are in their designated area, stand still and and calmly tell them to "Go Potty". Repeat until accomplished. Once "Job" is complete. PRAISE and TINY TREAT. You are doing a great job, if you know when your accidents are happening. If you are unsure if your Puppy needs to go, do not allow total freedom. Another tip if you are unsure if your Puppy needs to go outside and you need to get a couple things done. Use the temporary leash that was included with your puppy and keep your puppy either tethered to your wrist or ankle. This will keep your Puppy close to you. If you feel a tug, this is a sign that your puppy is looking to "Find a Spot" and needs to be picked up and taken back outside for duties. Each Success outside should be "Rewarded"! You are one "Duty" closer to having House Training accomplished!
TIPS FOR TRAINING!
It is very important that you carry puppy to designated area. Puppies do begin bladder control under the age of 12 weeks. If you ask them to follow you outside, chances are they will not make it. This also will encourage consistency for puppy to have a designated area. As they are in the same location.
The reason for feeding your puppy three meals a day is to give you some predictability. If you add just a little additive to their food, they will eat readily. I recommend Super Premium Canned, Cottage Cheese or Vanilla Yogurt.
If using Canned dog food, please be careful that you adhere to life span of the food.
Keep a Diary of every accident! What, Where and When! Chances are you will see a pattern. Back up your schedule by 20 minutes. I have found keeping track very helpful!

Winter Training Tips
Winter can be a little more challenging for housebreaking, but definitely can be accomplished. You must use common sense when dealing with Mother Nature.
When you have cold weather, puppy can go outside. Keep the puppy moving until duties are accomplished. If puppy sits in cold weather and begins to shake, they are at risk of catching a chill.
Keep in mind Wind Chill. Find a small area that is sheltered from the wind. Think ahead so that you have a plan.
If you have snow, clear a small area for puppy enough that they are able to accomplish their duty. Puppy may be reluctant if the snow is too deep.
EXTREME WEATHER
Use common sense. If you are under dangerous conditions, so is puppy.
If you are expecting to have extreme winter conditions. Set up a children's plastic swimming pool in your garage. Place either a piece of sod or small amount of pea gravel in the bottom. This will enable puppy to accomplish duties not in your home.
